There is a significant difference between the research field into ZPE and the amateur experiments with supposed ZPE effects. My answer is based on those who are researching or theorising about ZPE.

I suspect that Karn was directing his usual narrow minded attack against the amateur experimentor. There is no doubt that this would attract a lot of scam merchants but no more so than a computer with an internet connection ! The problem is that the likes of Karn are so dismissive of ZPE possibilities that there will be a lot of highly respected people who avoid the subject for fear of ridicule (and their pay packets ). Yet, since NO-ONE actually fully understands the vacuum & gravity & inertia etc then clearly no possibilities can yet be honestly discounted.

The number of cranks, quacks, and downright frauds in this field comprises the majority of the fantastic claims being made daily by people trolling for funds from the uninformed. Scientifically the study of the structure of the vacuum is still a bonafide area of inquiry both in theory and experiment. Any new knowledge coming from this area could drastically affect our understanding of not only the vacuum, but the interactions that propagate through it.

Was this poll atteched to an article as a way of showing off? Very cool. Maybe I can get a poll about that ...

Certainly there is serious professional work on ZPE, and the people who are doing it are not confused by the quackery. And it can be said about almost *any* science these days that the layman is hard pressed to find accessible resources that are not filled with oversimplification, boosterism, hype, hyperbole, and sometimes even outright misconduct. The science journalists are part of the problem, but not all of it.

But QT is just an inaccessible topic and so it's more poisoned than most science journalism with new-age quackery, the ZP being about the worst.
