Thanks to Overtone for this: It apparently has been on display in Europe as a work of art.
If there is
no hidden battery, or other conventional source of energy, it would be
interesting to know the identity of the clever inventor.

The magnetic shield, in the center of the picture, which resembles a propeller, turns. The magnetic flux cannot pass through the shield. When the shield is in front of the magnets, they are attracted, when the shield is no longer in front of the magnets they are pushed away, because the magnets are now in repulsion. Finally the shield is used as a flywheel, repeatedly taking up and then discharging its kinetic energy.
Suitably modified, it can be used to generate electricity! Country of origin: France
Translation was made from the following French text.
DailyMotion - 3/31/2007

Excuse my English.
I am existance12d@hotmail.com
I found VideoCameraman and it is Erwan Pottier, I spoke with him.
I have write with the musical festival in Germany but the injury which is responsible is in vacancy.
It will answer me has its return.
I will find the inventor. It is necessary to be optimistic. I do not think that there is hidden Electromagnet.
In a friendly way Sebastien. |

I build a system like in the movie. As soon as I'm done testing I will post my results.
Best regards

If you use it to generate electricity, e.g. place a turbine in it, the B-field will cross induce an E-field onto the turbine (generating electricity) which will in turn cross induce another E-field onto the original magnetic plates, which oppose motion (Lenz's Law), and as such, will eventually cause the spinning magnets to slow down.
Remember people! There's a reason why it hasn't been done yet - total energy conservation of input energy into useful output is empirically impossible - for a reason.
Even here, the magnet isnt going to spin forever - it will slow down eventually, if there are losses in axis, or if there is even a small bit of metal inside the B-field.
There's a reason why perpetual motion doesnt work, we've achieved nearly 99.999999999% or so efficiency, but 100% is always going to be impossible. |

magnetic flux can pass through the shield, it gets through everything, except superconductors (which have to be super cooled, the latest ones, I THINK, operate at 60 ish kelvin.)
So, theres a flaw in the article :S |

I made a copy of the model with FAC meccano. I did several test and tried different modifications, but it didn't work as in the original movie. Also a computer simulation shows that it cannot work: the energy to withdraw the metal/shielding from the magnetic field is too high.
It might be that the original inventor build in some missing link that I am not aware of...

In tracking down the origin of the Believe Machine,
it seems that the fellow who built it, told Stephan Hartmann of Overunity.com [overunity.com] that there is a carefully hidden
motor.
Apparently, when he could not get it to work, he turned it into
an art project having the hidden motor.
