ZPEnergy.com - Legislation, incentives needed to stimulate alternative energy use

A working group led by the Chairman of Resources Dynamics Corp. (Vienna, Va), Richard Friedman, was charged with developing a standard for Distributed Generation (DG) interconnection, IEEE P1547. The process has attracted wide spread interest, with over 300 members participating in the group under the standards body, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The group is expected to publish a draft standard this year and the experts say its completion will be a watershed event for DG interconnection as well as for advancing other DG standards.

In Canada, an Ontario legislative committee was asked in September to promote proper legislation and provide incentives to stimulate the use of environmentally friendly electricity sources. Nobody can connect up to the utility grid in Canada with present legislation. The government was asked to implement "net-metering" legislation (already available in thirty eight American states) and encourage investment in the industry by creating tax incentives similar to those offered to the oil and gas industry! Consumer demand for "green" power could be stimulated by various government incentive programs.

Things are moving slow but definitely moving, and in the right direction!
