U.S. MAY LOOSE ITS GLOBAL LEAD IN SCIENCE, etc.
Posted on Friday, October 14, 2005 @ 22:33:45 GMT by vlad

Science October 13 - The Washington-based National Academies, the nation's leading science advisory group, is warning the United States may lose its global lead in science.

The 20-member panel, in a report released Wednesday, cited examples of emerging scientific and industrial power abroad and listed 20 steps the United States should take to maintain its global leadership in science.

    Full story at http://www.physorg.com/news7234.html

"Decisive action is needed now," the report warned, explaining the nation's old advantages "are eroding at a time when many other nations are gathering strength."

The proposals include creation of scholarships to attract 10,000 top students a year to careers in teaching math and science, and 30,000 scholarships for college-level study of science, math and engineering.

The advisory group also urges expansion of the nation's investment in basic research by 10 percent a year for seven years; and making broadband access available nationwide at low cost.

A summary of the report is available online at nationalacademies.org.

ANCIENT NEUTRINOS COULD PUT STRING THEORY AND QUANTUM LOOP GRAVITY TO THE TEST, October 13
Tiny but ageing neutrinos can be used to test the very foundations of quantum theory at unprecedented cosmological time scales

Must the Schrodinger's Cat be fat enough for us to detect the possible phenomenon of gravity-driven collapse of the wave-function? In the 1950s, Feynman suggested that the infamous Schrodinger's Cat paradox would be resolved if gravity can be implicated for the collapse of the wave-function.

FOR THE FIRST TIME, A FIVE-FOLD BOND, October 14
Chemists at UC Davis have made the first stable compound with a five-fold bond between two metal atoms. The work with chromium could give researchers new insights into the nature of chemical bonding.

WETNESS-DEFYING WATER? PHYSICISTS DISCOVER A PARADOX: HYDROPHOBIC WATER, October 14
Now you can extend that truism about oil and water to water and itself. Water and water don't always mix, either.
The textbooks say that water readily comes together with other water, open arms of hydrogen clasping oxygen attached to other OH molecules. This is the very definition of "wetness." But scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have observed a first: a single layer of water--ice grown on a platinum wafer--that gives the cold shoulder to subsequent layers of ice that come into contact with it.

The real reason why America is falling behind Scientifically.

The reason for such slow adaptation is the unscientific approach to scientific review that is based on GREED and jealously guarded pride. In example, last month I received a scientific review on my invention for an Indiana Government program designed to fund New Technologies. I provided a vast collection of scientific analysis on completely new forms of matter and even new crystal structures discovered under U of I Chicago analysis. The National Science Foundation (NSF) scientist agreed I had something very different and suggested I just GIVE Purdue my Reactor, turn the project over to the University and let them experiment with it. The Evans report had Three Raman Spectra, the Kaiser report alone had 9 Raman signatures and impressed him the most, Hong Kong over 20 and the University of Illinois Chicago over 20 Raman spectra - plus supporting SEM & TEM data. He also "Required" the proprietary process that allowed nanophase diamond production however I refused to just GIVE it to his buddies at Purdue because I needed the funding. I offered to bring samples of my materials into Purdue for verification analysis without the samples leaving my sight, and under the proviso that all samples would leave with me. A few days later he denied seeing my collection of data "except for one single Raman signature" - which he then called inconclusive by itself.

It turned out that this pompous Indiana State sanctioned NSF Scientist has NEVER provided funding to "any" non-university application, which is proven by public reports I later found. I will present the full story on this Indiana, Entrepreneur Funding for New Technology "shell game" within my own book, but scientific review is anything but scientific and these Ph.Ds feel that if anyone is worthy to profit from new discoveries - who better than themselves and their friends?

Look forward to a collapse of the US technological edge if the teaching of "Intelligent Design" becomes an accepted practice in the US school system.

Many others will take the place of a country that substiutes religious myth for scientific fact. They are looking forward to it.
