    Hi Rastahal

I'm convinced you're right! A 20hp Stirling Cycle engine would provide sufficient power in a gasoline-electric car to keep batteries fully charged except under heavy acceleration or a fast hill climb. Only the latter would seem to offer a performance limitation, and then only for the longest hill climbs when the batteries could deplete.

Unfortunately, in the past, automobile manufacturers don't seem to have been very motivated in making cars more fuel efficient. The Bourke Cycle engine is a good example of this - so clean burning that it doesn't need a cat, but then it wouldn't add more value (read cost) to the car.

The car manufacturers seem convinced that buyers wouldn't be interested in 100+mpg cars if there was any performance loss (even if only up the steepest and longest hills). The Stirling Cycle uses external combustion, so can't produce power at the initial turn of the key. However, with even much smaller batteries in a gasoline-electric car than required in an electric only car, there would still be ample electric power to drive before the Stirling engine heats up and produces power. It would also be a lot simpler and cheaper to manage than current hybrid technology.

I'm still hoping that Mike Brady manages to get his Perendev permanent magnet motor out commercially. Then we won't have to mess around with gas engines at all! It will be fun to see the Laws of Physics re-written too, not to mention the end of the gravy train for hot fusion researchers.

    Regards,

    AndyC
