It's a difficult concept to accept, but in fact 3 out of 4 watts generated at the station that is put into the grid never gets to the outlet. The exception is high voltage DC transmission, which is being used in special situations but not very commonplace. Don't worry, you are being charged for it, its not a total loss.
When the utilty company says they only lose 5% they mean errors in billing measurement. In the real world of power measurement, which is an area that I have had some experience, the situation has always been pretty dismal and will continue to increase as demands for electrical power rise.

In the next generation distribution system, which will cost on the order of 1 trillion dollars , every stage of the distribution system will have intelligent networked power factor control, including the system in your house.

The losses look like generation losses of 200% over net generation and approximate 10% transmit loss.
