Research is a business these days, and researchers tend to be more manager than investigator, although they do set out the protocols and procedures of the research. In most examples its a case of interpolation rather than extrapolation.

    I'll give you an example:

Lets say you're working for an aerospace firm that has to come up with a way to bond to different types of materials together that have never been joined together. Lets say that for whatever reason, its been determined that these materials will be brazed (high temperature soldering) together.

Your job would be to investigate mixtures of brazing compounds in a certain range of mixtures, and you only have a certain amount of time to do it. You may have to look into twenty or thirty compounds that have already been predetermined because they are already manufactured. You will have to perform a complete range of tests on each substance, and make an exhaustive report (and I do mean exhaustive!) on each one. Whats worse is that no one will probably read anything that you found in most of those (exhaustive) reports. At the conclusion of your research, your results will recommend the best braze for the job. You have no incentive to go outside the bounds of the problem, and perhaps develop another type of compound that performs better. The only hope of that is if your reports are inconclusive, which in the research business, means that you have failed. Only then might you be allowed to try something new, and only if you have more support for your research. There is also the possibility that you could make a mistake in your research and find something truly extraordinary, and thats where the really big breakthroughs are made.
In all, research is something like warfare, long periods of extreme tedium, followed by by short periods of excitement when something goes wrong.
