$12.5 MILLION IN SUBCONTRACTS AWARDED FOR FUSION EXPERIMENT
Posted on Wednesday, October 06, 2004 @ 21:03:34 UTC by vlad

Science From the PhysOrg Newsletter (Oct 6, 2004): The U.S. Department of Energy's (USDOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) has awarded two subcontracts for the fabrication of major components for the National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX), now under construction at the Laboratory. NCSX will explore the physics of an innovative concept for fusion energy production and will advance the understanding of the related basic science. PPPL is building the new experiment in partnership with the USDOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

SCIENTISTS PREDICT NOVEL MELT CURVE OF HYDROGEN POINTING AT THE POSSIBLE EXISTENCE OF A NEW SUPERFLUID STATE, October 06
Scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have discovered a new melt curve of hydrogen, resulting in the possible existence of a novel superfluid - a brand new state of matter
As reported in the Oct. 7 edition of the journal Nature, the researchers present the results of ab initio calculations of the hydrogen melt curve at pressures up to 2 million atmospheres.
The measurement of the high-pressure phases of hydrogen has been the focus of numerous experiments for nearly a century. However, the phase boundary that separates the solid and the liquid has remained relatively unknown.

RESEARCHERS SAY HYDROGEN POWERED CARS WOULD NEED 100,000 WIND TURBINES OR 100 NUCLEAR PLANTS, October 06
Researchers from the University of Warwick have produced a startling calculation that any move to replace the UK's oil burning vehicles with greener hydrogen powered cars and trucks would require the erection of 100,000 new wind turbines or 100 new nuclear power plants.

Another innovative concept for fusion energy production? How many times have we heard this one? Having followed fusion research since almost its inception, I wish I had a dime for every innovative concept that still doesn't produce breakeven power levels! Its time someone started asking serious questions to the fusion community about what we are spending our money on, the energy "picture" from the 1950's had projected viable fusion power at the beginning of the 21st century to replace oil and coal as energy sources.

Its about time to threaten the coddled Hot Fusion research community with some unemployment unless we see some results. That money should be going to alternatives if we can't project success in the foreseeable future.

As far as hydrogen powered cars, the article gave me an idea. How about providing every alternative energy vehicle with its own windmill? A small farm windmill running overnight could put out enough power to make a difference, without plugging into the electric grid.
