Title: 60 times more energy output
Posted on Thursday, February 20, 2003 @ 12:19:19 UTC by vlad

General matt writes: A recent article in New Scientist offers details of a reaction in which scientists released 60 times the energy they put into it.

The article focuses on the United States Air Force’s plans to use nuclear-powered drones, but reveals details of a 1999 experiment in which scientists released 60 times the energy they put into it. The process is known as quantum nucleonic reaction and uses X-rays on hafnium-178 to liberate gamma rays, thus releasing more energy than was input. What most would define as over-unity. From the article: "The military interest was triggered by research published in 1999 by Carl Collins and colleagues at the University of Texas at Dallas. They found that by shining X-rays onto certain types of hafnium they could get it to release 60 times as much energy as they put in (New Scientist print edition, 3 July 1999)." The process is considered safer than normal fission reactions. Please read the complete article at: http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993406

Sounds like the source of the energy is not in question though - it comes from a fission reaction. So it will not excite anyone too much as it is a very specific set of circumstances.

It isn't any more "over unity" than a current nuclear reactor, based on this limited description.
