David Creighton writes: Regarding this announcement, I just finished reading Richard Heinberg's The Party's over: Oil, War, and the Fate of Industrial Societies, this morning! What a great read. When I started reading it a few days ago I wrote, "it takes off from the 'dieoff' (Jay Hanson) and 'runningonempty' (Bruce Thomson) discussions several years ago, eclipses Jared Diamond's bestseller *Guns, Germs and Steel: The Fate of Human Societies*, soars through the best written exploration of 'ecology' I have ever read, enters the world of George W. Bush's 'oiligarchy', the 'war on freedom', conquest of Iraq, and well as some pet theories (Chapter 4: Non-Petroleum Energy Sources: Can the Party Continue? that includes "Fusion, Cold Fusion and Free-Energy Devices") through to the future of complex (industrial) societies...
An excellent read, ongoing. (I bought it over the internet from the publisher, www.newsociety.com, can't remember why.) I recommend it to all energy users (and residents of industrial societies who are curious about what's going on)." That quick impression still holds at the end of the book with the added comment that it links the dots between our 'party time' use of fossil fuels, the carrying capacities of our planet, international business and politics, credit-based money, war, and the galloping challenges we are encountering today, but not without cautious optomism. A remarkable accomplishment. Highly recommended.
