New physics book undercuts Cold Fusion

I purchased this book:

"A Different Universe" by Robert B. Laughlin and while the overall book content was very cutting edge, easy to read, and right-on as far as physics goes, I was saddened to see him undercut and put down Eugene Mallove and the Cold Fusion/Low Energy nuclear reaction research.

The author never actually gives you any SCIENTIFIC reason as to why cold fusion is impossible.
All he does is state the regurgitated standard claims, that "real" fusion must take place with hot high temperatures, etc etc etc. And he mentions some interview with Gene Mallove.

Finally he agrees with other debunker-skeptics against cold fusion, claiming it wastes funds that should go for more "valid research".

But here is my question....on this matter...

BILLIONS of dollars have been wasted over many decades to achieve hot nuclear fusion...and there has been zero success, apart from some working hot fusion devices like that of Philo Farnsworth, which is not based on the conventional Tokamak system.

So, why not fund cold fusion, which has hundreds and even thousands of successful experiments showing excess heat, energy, transmutation products, etc etc etc?
