China is about to flick the switch on a global energy crisis and a timebomb that will bring massive destruction worldwide. By Kenny Kemp SWITCH on a light in your home. Any light. Then list the other uses of domestic electricity. Fridge, freezer, washing machine, tumble drier, vacuum cleaner, computer, DVD player, TV and video, mobile phone chargers, toaster... And that's just for starters. Now think of China. At present, this vast nation of 1.3 billion inhabitants (and rising) is using the equivalent of one 100-watt lightbulb per head, per year. But its population is developing an insatiable appetite for consumer goods. Forget global terrorism. One of the scariest stories today is how the Chinese are going to meet their energy demands over the next 20 years. While Scotland fumbles with issues of wind farms blighting the landscape, we should wake up to the potential energy horror story that will impact on everyone. I don't believe in any of the "green" doomsday stuff. Both Juliam Simon and the Danish guy (I forget his name) have discredited the doomsday stuff. Chinese economic growth, I'm all for it. I just got an instrument sale (I sell analytical instruments into semiconductor and flat panel display industries) there today and expect to get more this month alone. Chinese economic growth is good for everyone! There is an article in the current issue of Wired called "Let a 1000 Reactors Bloom". The Chinese are going to build at least 30 one-gigawatt powerplants by 2020 and another 300 (yes) by 2050. They are also commercializing the "pebble-bed" reactor design that Edward Teller first proposed in the 1950's. They believe that the pebble-bed reactors can be mass-produced (by assembly line) as modular components of 200MW generators each! They are also commercializing some (not all) of the integral fast reactor technology as well. I will also have you know that they are working on fusion (both cold and hot) and do not see any conflict of interest between cold fusion and conventional plasma fusion. I was not clear in this article (because of its green-oriented doom and gloom slant) but the Chinese are adopting "fluid-bed" technology for their coal-fired stations. They have also built a natural gas pipeline from Russia to beijing. The Chinese are starting to take environmental issues seriously. The part of this article that is no bull is the massive amounts of air and water pollution in China. Most of this is from the older coal-fired stations as well as the chemical and plastics manufacturers. Many of the older coal-fired stations are being upgraded with fluid-bed burners or phased out. The biggest source of air pollution in China (and Taiwan) are the moter scooters that use two-stroke engines. These are slowly being replaced with scooters with cleaner engines. Maybe the Chinese can be convinced to implement the old L-5 space solar power satellite idea and beam the energy backk to China from space. The demand for energy in China/India (where 70% of all the people on the planet live) is increasing every year. This can trigger a global crisis which could result into a world war, since wars are mainly escalated geopolitical conflicts (say 'struggle for resources').
