Yes, the Kyoto treaty is an idiot treaty. In any case, its dead. Get over it.

Unless any of this fusion or ZPE stuff turns out to be real, the only real solution is nuclear power and, maybe, space based solar power. There is a new nuclear reactor technology where the fuel cycle is integrated into the reactor. Its call the integral fast reactor or the advanced fast reactor and it neatly resolves all of the problems of current nuclear reactors (such as high-level nuclear waste, plant life-time issues, and weapons proliferation).

I am a big proponent of the integral fast reactor concept.

It is worthwhile to note that the Japanese (Toshiba) have bought Westinghouse. One of Toshiba's competitors will probably make a bid on GEs nuclear power division, if the U.S. government does not try to block the sale. The Asians know which side their bread is buttered on. Do we?

It is interesting that with all of this talk about global warming and peak oil, noone has bothered to bring out and dust off the old O'neill/L-5 solar power satellite and space colony idea. The proposed carbon nanotube space elevator would make this scheme more doable.

I found an interesting blog on the development of thorium-based nuclear power.

Thorium nuclear power sounds even better than uranium-based IFR plants.
