Devices Breakthrough In Energy Storage: New Carbon Material Shows Promise Of Storing Large Quantities Of Renewable Electrical Energy

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2008) — Engineers and scientists at The University of Texas at Austin have achieved a breakthrough in the use of a one-atom thick structure called "graphene" as a new carbon-based material for storing electrical charge in ultracapacitor devices, perhaps paving the way for the massive installation of renewable energies such as wind and solar power.

The researchers believe their breakthrough shows promise that graphene (a form of carbon) could eventually double the capacity of existing ultracapacitors, which are manufactured using an entirely different form of carbon.

"Through such a device, electrical charge can be rapidly stored on the graphene sheets, and released from them as well for the delivery of electrical current and, thus, electrical power," says Rod Ruoff, a mechanical engineering professor and a physical chemist. "There are reasons to think that the ability to store electrical charge can be about double that of current commercially used materials. We are working to see if that prediction will be borne out in the laboratory."...

Important Twist in Supercapacitor Research (Score: 1)

(PhysOrg.com) -- Car batteries as we know them today may soon be relics. Storing energy in clunky containers with limited shelf lives has plagued car makers and military engineers who need lightweight, powerful and reliable means to crank engines into life, enliven radios and operate other electronic appliances.

so this is about as energy dense as one canlikely get in capacitors (but what is the actual energy density??). where does/will the electricity come from to charge these capacitors? magic?

We'd be better off, environmentally, burning the same graphene carbon for energy then use botrycoccus algae to photosynthetically reform the CO2 to hydrocarbon for reuse. All we need to do is figure out the most efficient way gro the algae.

The electricity can come from a variety of sources.  This is, in fact, the solution that's staring right back at the politicians.  However, they want a centralised solution e.g. power stations which they can control, tax etc  What they don't want is everybody generating their own power from a mixture of whatever natural resources a house/factory can access. All can access wind and sun, some can access hydro and thermal underground. Neighbourhoods can more than likely access all 4.  NB even temperate regions can heat a house with the temperature difference between the surface and 2 metres down from a garden!!!

Distributed power generation is the model of the future and don't listen to anybody who says otherwise.  Centralised power is for the control freaks.

What you will get is distortions by the control freaks stating something like : A typical house needs 8KW of power in winter you can't produce that with solar panels on an average roof even with an acceptable wind turbine.  What they forget to say is that a typical house needs 8Kw PEAK and on average 20Kwh per day and thus "generators" of less than 1Kw. If you have batteries to store all that night time wind power and midday whilst at work solar power. Hence the need for high capacity, long life, fast charge, fast discharge and cheap batteries.

I agree and heartily endorse your post!

    POWER TO/FROM WE 'SERFS':
Recently, in an article concerning H2 (produced @home/Fairbanks,AK),
there was an allusion to PV functionality at 'Fairbanks' latitude!
Hence: PV can function, at production/productive capability near the
Arctic Circle.  Germany has significant Photovoltaics installed and
    functioning!

    reL CENTRALIZED POWER:
The 'Rulers', of we 'Serfs' consider Nuclear Power to be an
"Alternative Energy" source; though to my awareness, the
Nuclear Waste from the earliest and subsequent efforts:
(Oak Ridge, Hanford, ?Denver?, ?Amarillo?, "Savannah River",)
has yet to be "Disposed-of 'safely' "!
At one time their was talk of a 'Nuclear Priesthood', to educate
we 'Serfs' through 'millenia'; that the "Word" of the
Dangers of Radiation exposure, "would never be erased"!
    Plutonium half-life 1/4 million years . . . means that 'after a 1/4
million years', the Plutonium would still retain Half it's original
    strength . . . ?What? . . .it would be safe to eat after 4 or 5
    million years???
No Thank You!; to me:  "just Turn-off the lights",
Rather than subject ?All Future 'Life Forms', All inhabitants of Planet Earth
    to eons of radiation!
"just Turn-off the lights" . . . It is not my prerogative to 'knowingly' JEOPARDIZE future inhabitants, simply for my comfort and convenience!

    TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIALS:
    Malc; What is "NB"?
NB even temperate regions can heat a house with the temperature difference between the surface and 2 metres down from a garden!!!
Please: More info on ?capturing? the 'heat differential' between
'Garden Surface' and '2 metres' below the 'Garden Surface'?

    BACK TO THE PAST . . . Not Streetcars, 'Light Rail' . . .
Massive 'Solar Projects' are seen as the 'New Future' . . . whereas,
many ?multitudes? of 'mirror trough' centralized systems, that were
all the rage in the early 1970's, have fallen into disrepair,
or 'dismantled' after having been abandoned for years!

    A SINGLE STEP:
Keep up the Good Effort!  as the Chinese observed centuries ago:
"The Longest Journey, begins with a 'Single Step'!"
One 'heat differential capturing device', one PV panel, one
vertical or horizontal Axis (Wind or Tides/Currents),
    one 'Ultracapacitor', OR one "Brown's Gas" installed on one vehicle;
    begins the journey!

New Lithium-Ion Ultracapacitor Can Charge Tools In Under 60 Seconds
    by Timon Singh, 01/13/11

Let’s face it, the main burden of electrical products is the time they take to charge – be they mp3 players, power tools, or even electric cars. However, this could soon be a problem of the past, as New York-based company Ioxus [www.ioxus.com] has developed a new type of lithium ion ultracapacitor [www.ioxus.com] that can potentially deliver large amounts of energy in a small amount of time.

Ioxus specialises in high performance ultracapacitors and hybrid-capacitors that are meant for devices with high performance but low resistance. In theory, this makes them ideal for items that require large amounts of power for acceleration, energy [inhabitat.com] capture, or ‘high power application’ – such as power tools...
