Plan Uses Plasma Beam for Space Travel
Posted on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 @ 04:37:37 EDT by rob

Science matt writes: According to a story in Wired Magazine, a Washington researcher is proposing the use of plasma beams to propel spaceships.

Robert Winglee, a professor at the University of Washington, leads the team that's pioneering the concept of the Mag-beam, or magnetized-beam plasma propulsion. Plasma beam stations would be used at each end of an interplanetary flight path to speed up and slow down a spacecraft. The idea began receiving attention from NASA's Institute for Advanced Concepts when the institute awarded $75,000 earlier this month to identify the challenges involved in implementing it. What a waste of $75,000 - but we can be thankful it was not $75 Million. How science fiction bullshit gets funding is beyond understanding.

A plasma propulsion system must be onboard the craft, and this makes instant maneuvering possible.
