    Zero Point Energy goes Hollywood!
Posted on Saturday, July 17, 2004 @ 17:08:40 GMT by vlad

General rastahal writes: Following the progress of Zero Point Energy and it's potential over the years, I've often entertained the thought that the concept of ZPE would some day make the perfect power source for Hollywood science fiction screen writers.

Because of it’s foundation in science, the concept of ZPE would give screenwriters a break from writing more "techno babble" to support a story line. And because you don't have to carry ZPE during space travel and it's available anywhere, it would seem easy to incorporate this concept into science fiction in a big way.

Many of us science fiction fans have seen Hollywood use just about everything as a fuel source. As I grew up, nuclear fuel seems to have been the most favored energy source for past Hollywood writers, and that seemed to make sense as it had a growing place of importance as a viable fuel source in our own reality.

But strange Hollywood energy offshoots abound, everything from Star Trek's dilithium crystals to the current Stargate SG-1's naquida generators.

But now it seems our beloved ZPE has found a home in Hollywood!

Being a fan of SciFi channel's Stargate series, I was eager to watch the premier of the first Stargate spin-off, Stargate Atlantis.

As the story begins, they learn that to get to “Atlantis” through the stargate, it will take much more power than usual…nothing strange there! But, imagine my surprise when the subject of possible power sources was discussed and, lo and behold, the power source of choice was zero point energy!

One of the characters had to explain the concept a bit to the others and I'm glad to report that what he said wasn't just techno babble, it was obvious to this viewer that someone had researched the subject. Energy from the vacuum was used as a description as was energy from space-time!

As the story progresses and they discover Atlantis, the power source of this “lost city of the Ancients” is discovered to be…you got it …zero point energy!
The show uses the term ZPM, an analogy for Zero Point Module.

Obviously, depending on this show's success, we will hear many more references to some form of ZPE, on this show and hopefully others in the future. It’s my belief that this kind of public exposure to the concept of zero point energy is very good for our cause…so tune in and check it out!

I first heard about Stargate's use of Zero Point
Vacuum energy about a month ago. But I'm a little
split on whether this is a good thing.

On one hand, you might get the X-files effect, where
well known concepts (and their associated terminology)
become accepted as fiction. So people think that the
intricacy of UFO lore was invented by the X-files.
And that of course reduces the credibility of serious
people doing research in such areas.

On the other hand, if SG-Atlantis gets into the nitty
    gritty i.e.

    • explains the theory--which is unlikely

    • makes it clear it's something from the real world

then that might pique the public's interest.

I personally think the mentioning of ZPE on television series will have an impact because that is exactly why I am here. I read about ZPE years ago and dismissed it as pure fiction. After the explanation by Dr. McKay on the series I remembered reading about ZPE and decided to see how far it has come over the years. I am just a regular Joe and I am very interested in ZPE and nanotechnology since it will make life for everyone much better. I am a very open-minded person and I believe if people would stop wasting their time criticizing ZPE and other technologies and working on solutions then we could make progress. However, if we waste time on trivial matters then these technologies will evade us for much longer than they should.

I'm in absolute agreement. TV coverage/use of scientific ideas/discoveries within story plots is an excellent way of disseminating the discoveries being made about ZPE. But it will always stay "SciFi", and therefore fantasy, unless people can actually see ZPE in action. Nuclear got such hype because it was a practical technology. ZPE, at present is not.

Unless EVERYONE can "see" ZPE in action, its uptake in the minds of the people will be limited to flights of fantasy and ignored.

Reports on this website say ZPE can be made routinely. So if someone manages to develop an AA battery replacement module that utilises ZPE, or anything like I've mentioned below, there would be an EXPLOTION in the SciFi genre and millions/billions of currency would find its way to ZPE research.

We don't need more hollywood. We need more research and development. If less resourses went to overstuffed hollywood idiots (and other entertainment and vanity areas) and more to those doing the actual science, then we may have success a lot sooner. It is distribution of resourses that is holding back the advance of new science, not the lack of hollywood and other entertainment.

The first step to success in any field is believing that it can be done. The Zero Point explorers have faced two almost insurmountable obstacles. First, any orthodox physicist will tell you that it absolutely positively CANNOT be done, the same thing they told Orville and Wilbur. The second is a lack of knowledge about the nature of this quantum wierdness energy. Combining these two facts leads to my belief that it will be done, and furthermore when it is achieved, it will look easy.

You seem to think advances in ZPE will be a good thing, I would like to know why you think it will be a good thing or a bad thing. Do you think the discovery of atomic fission was a good thing for the population of hiroshima (or the rest of planet). You seem very confused about science. It's just part of the universe not inherently good or bad just the way it is.

Unfortuntely SG:A described the ZPM as
"Ancient power source. Generates enormous power from vacumn energy derived from a self-contained region of subspace/time. Three ZPMs power the city of Atlantis."

Which makes it almost as much technobabble as the "subspace bubble" found in ST:TNG and ST:VOY. This is not true ZPE, but ZPE found in a specially-isolated region of a baby universe. One that eventually decays, stopping the electrical energy generation. In other words, not the ZPF found in our universe, and thus not universal and never-ending.

Too bad. So close, and yet Hollywood still got it wrong. Who was there technical advisor? Nobody from this forum, that's for sure!
