Subject: Newman Motor Demo (long)
Hi friends - As promised, I attended Joseph Newman's demonstration of
his unique motor assembly.
The demo was scheduled between 11am and 1pm this afternoon. However, I
ended up staying until approx. 2:30 for reasons which will be explained.

Until I heard the announcement about his demo on this list I was totally
unfamiliar with him and his pursuit of this technology which has spanned
nearly 20 years. Before I go into a detailed description of the
demonstration I'll bring everyone up to date. Forgive me if I tread on
familiar ground. I walked away from the demo with a wealth of info about
Joe Newman and his invention in the form of two videos and a rather
large book of some 585 pages chronicling his career and struggle to
bring this technology out into the open. The total sale price of this
material is $130. I only had $25 cash on me but was allowed to take both
videos and the book with the understanding that the remaining balance
would be forthcoming and a promise that it would be forwarded to Dr.', 'Greer. I can assure you that both conditions will be met.

One of the videos contains a complete demonstration that is nearly
identical to the demo I saw in person. The other video is a copy of a tv
interview which Newman did for what I assume was a public tv access
program called "Hidden Truths". The host of the program seemed to be a
bit full of himself which was quite annoying at times. However, several
video clips of Newman on various tv shows were included. The clips were
of poor quality, but the content was of greater importance than the poor
video images. The clips included appearances with Johnny Carson, and
several interviews with various major news networks such as CNN, CBS,
PBS and others. Also included were interviews with various scientists
who verified Newman's invention and its ability to produce more power", "than it consumed. The bulk of this hoopla took place during the '80's.", "This particular tape, showed a shot of Newman's workshop in Louisiana in
which a device that looked like a giant rotor turning inside of a large
container was being filmed. I distinctly remember seeing that footage
years ago with commentary saying that it was some sort of failed
perpetual motion machine! Yeah right!
In any event, Newman's invention caused quite a stir at the time. People", "like CBS's Dan Rather were commenting that this would change the world!", "We haven't heard that type of commentary from the mainstream press for
awhile. It further indicates that Joe Newman is no novice and has been
at this for a few years.', '
On to the demo............The demo was held in a small meeting room at
the hotel. At most, the room could only hold 50 to 60 people. The
attendance was paltry. By the end of the session there were only about
12 people there including me. No press.
Joe and his assistant Darryl Bonz arrived about 10 minutes before 11am
with a small amount of equipment. At this point I must say that I was
having serious doubts about this whole thing. Their equipment can best
be described as "home grown". Definitely not sophisticated or complex in
any way. Judging from what I initially saw of his stuff, I thought this
would be a waste of time. I would later regret having thought that after
the demo took place. It just goes to prove the old "Don't judge a book
by its cover" adage.

The equipment consisted of four panels on which were mounted six 8" x 8"
solar panels, 24 solar panels in all. Next was a small Dayton electric
motor mounted on a chunk of two by four wood. Attached to the motor was
a 24" fan connected to the motor shaft through a gear reduction
assembly. There were a myriad of jumper wires fitted with alligator
clips.

The first part of the demo consisted of hooking up the solar panels in
parallel which were then connected to the small motor with the addition
of an ammeter in the line. Each of the panels were rated to put out a
maximum of 270 milliamps at 16 to 17 volts, depending on the amount of', 'sunlight available. It was a partly to mostly cloudy day and
subsequently they produced a maximum of about 14 volts at peak. The
panels were connected in parallel to enable as much current flow as
possible. When connected to the motor the fan turned at about 120 rpm
and drew about 3.8 amps at its fastest speed and varied according to the
amount of sunlight falling on the panels. At times it turned quickly,
and at other times stopped completely due to the lack of sufficient', 'current to turn the motor. Newman let this circuit run for about an hour
while he set up the second half of the apparatus.

The second part of the demo focused on the Newman motor. He wheeled in a
rather ungainly piece of hardware. The motor consisted of the motor
housing which looks like two long oil drip pans glued together with a
large motor shaft protruding out of both ends. The motor housing was
approximately 12 inches wide, 3 1/2 ft. long, and about 6 1/2 inches
thick. The motor shaft extended out beyond the ends of the housing
another 5 or 6 inches. One end of the shaft was for another fan blade.
The other end had a makeshift commutator and brush assembly attached.
The second part of the demo was delayed due to the fact that part of the
brush assembly had been broken off during transport to the hotel.
Frankly, it's a wonder the whole thing doesn't fall apart considering", "how it's put together. They were literally using krazy glue, packing
tape, and a pair of visegrips to hold it together. After about 20
minutes of delay, Newman and his assistant finally got it together.

The motor shaft looked to be 1 inch in diameter, hefty to be sure. Joe', 'said the motor and housing weighed approx. 350 lbs., as opposed to the
Dayton motor and fan assembly which couldn't have weighed more than 15
lbs. The fan placed on the large motor was 60 inches in diameter and
weighed about 40 lbs. making the entire assembly close to 400 lbs. In
addition to the large motor was a cardboard box with four wires coming
out of the four corners. The box looked to be about 12" x 18"
and about 8" deep. There was also a large box capacitor with large
ceramic terminals on top. It looked to be about 6 to 7 inches high and 4
or 5 inches wide.
Before disconnecting the small motor from the solar array he confirmed
with everyone in the room that at its fastest speed it was drawing about
3.8 amps or 3800 milliamps.

Now......instead of running the solar panels in parallel, he connected', 'them in series, meaning their voltage output would be increased by 24
times the individual rating of 17 volts per panel for a total of 408
volts. However, now the current would be limited to the maximum of 270
milliamps. He invited everyone out on to the porch where the panels were
sitting to confirm that he indeed was connecting them in series rather
than parallel.

Back to the big motor.............Just as with the small motor, he had
an ammeter wired into the circuit to provide a continuous reading. But
this time both the mystery box and the large capacitor were wired in
parallel with the motor connections. Then came the moment of truth. He
made the final connection to the solar panels and that big 60 inch fan
immediately began turning. It reached approx. 60 rpm, providing a nice
breeze for all to enjoy. A look at the ammeter showed a maximum
deflection of 40 milliamps and a low of 20 amps. It oscillated back and', 'forth between the two as the circuit on the brush assembly was being
broken and reversed at the 60 rpm rate. Since the meter wouldn't go all
the way to zero before the next connection of the brushes was made, it
only dropped to about 15 or 20 and then reversed back up to 40 for an
average of about 27 milliamps, or about one tenth the total maximum
output of the solar panels. That giant fan and motor were drawing less
than one tenth the power it took to run the small Dayton motor! It gets
better...............The motor and Newman's mystery box were also
charging the capacitor. The voltage reading across the capacitor kept
increasing with time. The input voltage was 400 volts. However, after
just 30 seconds or so, the reading across the capacitor showed almost
800 volts and rising steadily. The supposed conclusion is that his motor
assembly is generating additional power to charge the capacitor while
operating the motor at the same time. The voltage continued to increase
at a steady rate. He disconnected the capacitor from the running
circuit somewhere around 1700 volts. He said he didn't like running it
up past 2000 for safety reasons. This is now getting pretty interesting.', '
After discharging the capacitor and disconnecting the solar panels, he
then disconnected the mystery box from the circuit and shorted all four
wires form the box together to show that there was no additional power
source in the box such as a battery. He then reconnected everything and
the motor once again started running. While it was running he', 'disconnected the mystery box from the circuit. The motor continued to
run proving that the box was not contributing power to the circuit.
For the next almost two hours, the motor continued running at a steady
60 rpm and avg. 27 milliamps. When the solar panels were connected to
the small motor, the speed varied widely depending on the sunlight. Yet
on the large motor the speed was constant despite the varying sunlight.
Principally because it was only drawing one tenth the potential output
power of the panels. Keep in mind it was also charging the capacitor as
well, meaning that if the capacitor were replaced with a battery, the
battery could be used to power another motor off the same circuit.
Newman said he has powered another motor using the capacitor as the
power source. He postulated that given the current readings, he could
power as many as 10 such motors off the same set of solar cells.

He kept repeating one principle over and over. Conventional rules say
that the bigger the motor, the larger the amount of power required to
run it. But in this case his larger motor requires less power than the
small motor and generates excess power within the circuit to boot! The
underlying principle of his design as I understand it is that the
primary and secondary windings of the motor produce a flyback spike as
the magnetic field in the coils collapses with each change in polarity.
The more windings, the bigger the spike, many times larger than the
input voltage of the circuit. He contends that has found a way to', 'capture that huge spike with his mystery box and use it to generate more
power than the circuit alone is capable of producing. In other words,
over unity. But he doesn't call it over unity. In fact he doesn't call
it anything at all.', '
At one point while the Newman motor was running, he repeatedly
discharged the capacitor while it was still in the circuit. Each time
the meter would show it dropping to about 400 volts and then start
increasing again immediately.', '
While he didn't address it directly, I learned from somebody else at the", "demo who is very familiar with Newman's work that his motor design
incorporates both coils and permanent magnets. This is what supposedly
allows him to generate the huge flyback spikes.

My conclusion is that considering everything that was shown, including
the continuous monitoring of the working motor and the disconnection of
various components as it was running, this is the genuine article. As I
stated last night, I'm not an electronics expert. I probably know just
enough to be dangerous as they say. But what I saw today most certainly
demands further investigation. The number of endorsements Mr. Newman has', 'collected over the years from various members of the scientific
community leads me to believe that he is regarded as legit by said
experts.

Many times during the course of the demo he expressed a deep
appreciation for the knowledge and insight which he says was given to
him by God. From all indications he seems to be a very spiritual person', 'and not afraid to say so. He is also very driven to assure that this
technology is allowed to flourish and change the world. He has been at
this a very long time and it shows in his openly strong frustration with
the power brokers and oil magnates who have tried to thwart his efforts
by bribery and outright threats of violence.

He may well be just the type of person Dr. G. is looking for at SEAS. -
