    Gravity Wheel
Posted on Saturday, May 17, 2003 @ 18:05:52 UTC by vlad

    Devices Anonymous writes: It claims to run at 19 RPM in one verification...quite fascinating....One of the quotes from the builder;

"This device is actuated by giving it a slight tip of the hand. It is turned off by stopping it by hand, as well. As I am no bessler, I have been able to obtain an RPM of only about 19. (Perhaps my bearing assembly is a bit robust for such a small model)...

I would expect this to improve in future models. I am leaving it to the young and impetuous brains out there to scale it up enough to get any useable power generation!

The device's speed is self governing, it ramps up to speed quickly and simply stays there, although I have noticed some times if you start the wheel with too much impetus from your hand, it will sometimes "hiccup" in motion for quite some time afterwards.

It may go right up to speed and then slow down and speed up until, it seems, that the extra energy from push starting it dissipates! I want to make clear that this device is NOTHING without the verification of replication."

There seems to be a raft of discussion, mostly slams saying it can't work....but I see no one actually building it....looking at it, I can't see how it would work since the springs and such are balanced all around....though with the spring action bobbing up and down in motion, it is possible they could provide enough inertia from the bobbing, at a key point to kick the wheel over and keep it running....

One verification... where? Who? Is this verification posted on the net
somewhere? I know the original builder claims it turns at that rate but the
only thing I've heard from others (including myself) who have either built a
physical or a software sim copy is that it turns backwards just briefly
until it reaches a balance point and then stops.

Actually it's a long page... if you read carefully you'll see that a few
people have tried to replicate it somewhat but for the most part it's simple
to see that it's a very old design that was proven to be flawed long ago.
Just replace the springs with rods and you've got a DaVinci or one of the
    attempts detailed in Maschinen Tractate.

You're right, it won't work. He makes alot of claims, but if you look
closely you'll see that he hasn't posted since... he's been strangely quiet.
At least as far as I can see.

You think maybe the MIB came and snatched him up? Or do you think it's more
likely that it doesn't *actually* behave as he claims? ;-)
