murray writes: I have read here about how the Universe began. But another question is: Why did the Universe begin? Was there in fact a reason for the Universe coming into existence? Was the existence of God a pre-requisit for the existence of the Universe? If so, what reason did God have for creating the Universe?

I asked if there was a reason for the Universe coming into existence. If we want to say that God created it, then we should be able to accept as a given that God must have had some Reason for creating it. If we deny the existence of God, then we don't have to concern ouselves with any particular Reason for the existence of the Universe. If we say that the Universe just came into existence by chance, then that eliminates the need for any Reason at all being involved.

Philosophers such as David Hume have done their best to destroy the whole concept of Reason in either the Universe as a whole or in our daily lives.

I don't like David Hume at all. But I do consider myself a Philosopher, which people such as Stephen Hawking and others like him make no claim to being. They would like to push Philosophy off to the side and make it just a past-time for people that just want to essentially fool around with their time and not do anything of any lasting value or meaning.

I myself choose to make the following comments, and I welcome any replies that someone may choose to make:

What is so incredibly important and meaningful about HOW the Universe began? What is so wonderful and profound about a "BLACK HOLE?" Did you ever in your whole life come into any contact with a BLACK HOLE? Do you think you ever will come into contact with one?

I wonder how much time Mister Mega-Genius spent delving into his "profound notions" about HOW the Universe began. And at the same time I am reminded of Clark Gable at the end of Gone With the Wind, except that I reserve the right to paraphrase that pungent witticism:

"FRANKLY, MISTER MEGA-GENIUS, I DON'T GIVE A DAMN HOW THE UNIVERSE BEGAN!"

But I do care a whole lot about how to make it a better place to live and let-live in.
