AFS TRINITY UNVEILS 150 MPG EXTREME HYBRID (XH™) SUV
Posted on Sunday, January 13, 2008 @ 20:53:53 PST by vlad

General Anonymous writes: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Company releases proving ground data, Details new “Fast Energy” technology for plug-in hybrids

DETROIT, January 13, 2008 . . . In just completed road tests, a 2007 SUV straight off an American automaker’s showroom floor and subsequently equipped with the patent pending Extreme Hybrid™ (XH™) drive train, exceeded 150 mpg, AFS Trinity Power Corporation reported today at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

AFS Trinity CEO Edward W. Furia provided details of the tests and the patent pending Fast Energy Storage™ system that makes the Extreme Hybrid™ possible. During Furia’s report, a second, identically-equipped and fully functional SUV demonstrator of the XH™ technology was unveiled and will remain on display throughout the Auto Show.

“Extreme Hybrids™ don’t need high priced technology and don’t require new or expensive fuels, such as hydrogen, which, according to Argonne National Labs, will cost twice as much as gasoline at the pump and require installation of an infrastructure costing half a trillion dollars. The Extreme Hybrid™ is not a concept,” Furia said, “but a practical alternative that relies on cheap electricity from America’s vast existing energy infrastructure—the electric power grid.” Furia also pointed to a recent U.S. DOE study that concluded sufficient excess electrical generating and transmission capacity exists today during off-peak hours in America’s power grid to recharge 84% of America’s light duty car, truck and SUV fleet—184 million vehicles—even if they were all converted to plug-in hybrid drive trains... Its not really 150 MPG,  since it is assumed the car batteries are also charged during night time, which adds extra electricity costs and extra "mileage to the gallon". I assume it is more like  80 MPG  which still is very good.

It has ultra-capacitors for fast acceleration and combined with batteries this result into longer lasting batteries. However, cheap li-ion batteries are not very cheap and have a limited life time, and need to be replaced each 4,5 years (??). I think the 'break-even' time figure of 3 a 4 years (the car saves fuel costs but is more expensive than the average prodcution car)  is a bit longer when taking into account battery replacement costs, say 7,8 years.

Not mentioned is the type of electric motor. If it is an AC motor then we have to thank Nikola Tesla for that.  Does it need to be cooled like the Tesla-motor roadster?

It is clear the AFS Trinity car  has many advantages over the conventional ICE based cars, and it can be made with readily available technology. One can make use of wind and solar power. It is a shame the electric drive hybrid has not been developed much earlier. Even without ultracapacitors and li-ion batteries it could have been useful, and it could have ignited the development of high electric power density and high electric energy density technology much sooner,  and alternative power sources as well.

Company With Hybrid Battery Solution to Seek Billions From Energy Department
By Matthew L. Wald

...

AFS Trinity announced on Monday that it had put the electric system through a ten-month test in which it was charged from a wall socket and then discharged in a pattern typical of a 40-mile drive, including accelerations and regenerative braking.

The testing, carried out by an independent lab, Mobile Power Solutions [www.mobilepowersolutions.com], of Beaverton, Ore., found that the buffered batteries lasted through 3,800 cycles, which would be more than 12 years for a car charged six times a week.

Unbuffered, the batteries lasted only 500 cycles — equivalent to less than two years.
