SCIENTISTS CONCLUDE EARTH'S ENERGY IS 'OUT OF BALANCE'
Posted on Thursday, April 28, 2005 @ 21:16:59 UTC by vlad

General Using satellites, data from buoys and computer models to study the Earth's oceans, scientists have concluded that more energy is being absorbed from the Sun than is emitted back to space, throwing the Earth's energy "out of balance" and warming the planet.

Scientists from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), The Earth Institute at Columbia University, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have confirmed the energy imbalance by precisely measuring ocean heat content occurring over the past decade.

LUCA TECHNOLOGIES CONFIRMS REAL-TIME METHANE GENERATION, April 28
May provide opportunity to convert finite oil resource to long-term production of natural gas

Luca Technologies LLC today announced that its researchers have confirmed the presence of a resident, methane-generating community of microorganisms ("microbial consortium") in substrate samples taken from the 110,000 acre Monument Butte oilfield located in North Eastern Utah. This site represents the latest in a series of active "GeobioreactorsTM" that Luca Technologies has identified since its first demonstration of this phenomenon in the Powder River Basin coalfields of Wyoming. Geobioreactors are sites where microbial conversion of underground hydrocarbon deposits (oil, oil shales, and coal) to methane is ongoing. Such Geobioreactors may offer the potential of turning currently finite energy reserves into methane "farms" capable of long-term, sustainable energy generation.

GLOBAL WARMING PLUS NATURAL BACTERIA COULD RELEASE VAST CARBON DEPOSITS (Score: 1)

GLOBAL WARMING PLUS NATURAL BACTERIA COULD RELEASE VAST CARBON DEPOSITS CURRENTLY STORED IN ARCTIC SOIL, May 06

Increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will make global temperatures rise. By studying soil cores from the Arctic, scientists have discovered that this rise in temperature stimulates the growth of microorganisms that can break down long-term stores of carbon, releasing them into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. This will lead to further increases in global temperatures.

EARTH'S REFLECTIVITY A GREAT UNKNOWN IN GAUGING CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS, May 06

Earth's climate is being changed substantially by a buildup of atmospheric greenhouse gases, but a group of leading climate scientists contends the overall impact is not understood as well as it should be because data are too scarce on how much energy the planet reflects into space.

Reflectivity, or albedo, is largely governed by clouds and atmospheric particles called aerosols, but it is one of Earth's least-understood properties, said Robert Charlson, a University of Washington atmospheric scientist. Yet research aimed at quantifying the effects of albedo and helping scientists understand how it could affect future climate change has been delayed or shelved altogether.

RESEARCHERS USE SYNCHROTRON TO SHED LIGHT ON CADMIUM'S ROLE IN CARBON CYCLE, May 06

An international team that includes two University of Saskatchewan Canada Research Chairs has discovered that the element cadmium, well known for its toxicity to humans and other animals, may play an essential role in regulating atmospheric carbon.
The findings will be published in the May 5, 2005 issue of the prestigious science journal Nature.
