SplashPower
Posted on Monday, February 14, 2005 @ 23:43:10 UTC by vlad

Devices I find this a very smart idea. Splashpower Ltd was named by Tornado Insider among Europe’s top 100 private tech companies. From their site:

A World with Splashpower on tap

Imagine a world where re-charging mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players is completely hassle-free and convenient, where you never need to remember to carry a charger with you when you travel, where the whole world uses the same solution.

The Splashpower vision is about every device using the same unifying wireless power solution and charging points being rolled out to a world-wide network of public-access charging hotspots.

Common furnishings and everyday environments become the unobtrusive power support infrastructure for mobile devices. Whether it’s an airport lounge in Tokyo, a coffee shop in Toronto or a hotel in Stockholm, all will have Splashpower charging hotspots integrated in their environments.

You will be able to walk into these locations, drop a collection of products on the Splashpower hotspot and experience the freedom of top-up charging on-the-go, secure in the knowledge that power is on tap™ when you need it most. You never need to worry about charging again.

Splashpower is a wireless power solution:

- It enables you to power up your mobile phone and other portable devices, simply by dropping them on a mouse-mat-sized pad, called a SplashPad™
- No physical connection is required between the SplashPad and the device – power is transferred wirelessly
- Different devices can be charged on a single SplashPad at the same time
- Splashpower spells an end to hunting for the right charger, finding free socket spaces or fiddling with connectors and offers a solution to the charging problem of current and next generation portable products

The Splashpower solution comprises two parts: the SplashPad charging base and the SplashModule power receiver.

SplashPad™ Charging Base

This is a universal wireless charging platform which delivers power to mobile devices. The SplashPad is a portable flat surface powered from any electric outlet. Put as many devices as you can fit on it and charge up - it's that simple. It can easily be built into cars, desks, coffee tables and airplane tables.

- Generates inductive field to power any enabled device placed on the pad.
- Sizes can vary from one-device to many-devices
- Stand-alone and integrated (e.g., in a car) versions demonstrated
- Customisable appearance including use of a variety of casing materials
- Designed for international standards and regulations (including CE, UL etc.)

SplashModule™ Power Receiver

All mobile devices fitted with a SplashModule are ready to receive wireless power from a SplashPad charging base. The thin receiver module is customized to the shape, size and power requirements of the device and can be easily integrated into the host device or add-on accessories.

- Receives power from the SplashPad charging base
- Versatile implementation. Virtually any area/shape - customised to device
- Flexible. Accommodates a range of curvatures
- Efficient
- Straight-forward integration

HIGH POWER SUPERCAPACITORS FROM CARBON NANOTUBES, February 15

Supercapacitors that can deliver a strong surge of electrical power could be manufactured from carbon nanotubes using a technique developed by researchers at UC Davis.
Supercapacitors are electrical storage devices that can deliver a huge amount of energy in a short time. Hybrid-electric and fuel-cell powered vehicles need such a surge of energy to start, more than can be provided by regular batteries. Supercapacitors are also needed in a wide range of electronic and engineering applications, wherever a large, rapid pulse of energy is required.

INDUSTRY'S FIRST TIN-BASED ANODE BATTERY WITH 30 PERCENT MORE CAPACITY, February 15

With the growing demand for smaller digital devices with increased functionality, the trade-off-until now-has been battery life. Sony Corporation today announced the industry's first hybrid lithium ion rechargeable battery. Dubbed NexelionTM the new battery utilizes a tin-based amorphous anode; translating into a 30% increase in the capacity per volume ratio compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries, and will be commercialized initially as a battery pack for Handycam® camcorder products.
